
Sijia Huang, a native of Shenzhen, China, is a percussionist who is making significant strides as a chamber and orchestral musician as well as a lecturer and educator. In 2024, she joined Arx Music Association, or “arx duo,” alongside Garrett Arney, a percussion duo dedicated to the expansion of the percussion repertoire with a long history of performance of new works and education across the US as a 501c(3) non-profit organization.
As a concerto musician, she has appeared in front of orchestras in the US and Europe. Recently, with arx duo, she performed Double Percussion Concerto by American Composer Nick DiBeradino with the Artosphere Festival Orchestra with Corrado Rovaris. In May of 2023, she embarked on a captivating tour across Spain as a soloist with the Yale Concert Band conducted by Thomas Duffy performing Viet Cuong’s percussion quartet concerto Re(new)al. In 2019, with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yuwon Kim, she appeared with the Percussion Collective performing Grammy-nominated composer Christopher Theofanidis’s percussion quartet concerto Drums Circles.
Ms. Huang’s passion for promoting the percussive art form extends past the concert hall. As an educator, she recently presented marimba masterclasses and led workshops for the Missouri Percussion Arts Society Day of Percussion event as a member of arx duo alongside Garrett Arney. Additionally, she has given lectures at TEDx-Shenzhen and TEDx-ShaheStreet, educating audiences on the vast history and variety of percussion and its role in music.
Ms. Huang has performed at music festivals including the Festival Napa Valley, Cortona Sessions for New Music, Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Brevard Music Center. Ms. Huang has held positions in orchestras such as principal percussionist position at Symphony in C in New Jersey and as a regular substitute percussionist with her hometown orchestra, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Huang holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Don Liuzzi, Robert van Sice, and Eric Millstein. While at Curtis, she received the prestigious Zildjian Company Honorary Award. She also holds a Master of Music and Master of Musical Arts from Yale University. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, studying with Svet Stoyanov and Joe Petrasek.
